Shifter Kart Check List - 2-Stroke Jetting Rules

Track Day - Daily Check List

Make it a habit to follow these recommendations and procedures, everytime that you go to the track.

Prior To 1st Practice

Check for loose nuts & bolts.
Check water in radiator and add tape if it is cold out.
Check tire pressure.
Check jetting, matching current conditions.
Warm-up engine - Check for proper water flow. Put your hand on the side of the cylinder and head... If it gets uncomfortably hot within a minute, you do not have good flow.

Basic Jetting Rules

Always start rich and work your way down.

Start with the main jet... Lean it out until you get the desired piston and plug readings. Then work on the low to mid range, with the pilot and needle.

Assuming everything else is functioning properly, you can read the piston as follows:

If the piston is detonating towards the exhaust side the main jet is too lean.
If the piston is detonating towards the intake side the pilot jet and needle are too lean.

After Every Practice Session

Do a plug chop, if possible.
Evaluate operating temperature - Add / remove tape, as needed.
Check tire pressure.
Check spark plug and make appropriate jetting changes.
Warm-up engine - Check for proper water flow. Put your hand on the side of the cylinder and head... If it gets uncomfortably hot within a minute, you do not have good flow.

End Of Each Day

Plug chop - Check piston burn.
Check reeds for breaks or cracks.
Check for loose nuts and bolts.

Maintenance

Change top end regularly - At least a ring every weekend and full top end every other weekend.
Change transmission oil every weekend.
